Assessing Measurement Error in Hypothetical Questions

چکیده

The hazard of asking survey participants hypothetical questions is that most often, responses are only an inferential vehicle for understanding preference and may not reflect the truth. Often it necessary to make a reasoned assumption about alignment individual's attitudes behaviors. In this paper, we discuss results from Survey Doctorate Recipients (SDR) pilot study experiment found significant response bias even when context was unambiguous included salient properties which were familiar respondents prior experience. asked Treatment group report their reaction slight alterations in SDR instrument; meanwhile, those Control hypothetically how they *would react* protocol if had experienced same changes. We identify presence across 10 respondent experience using both categorical quantitative methods. Our show consistently exhibited less than group. believe these differences representative measurement error resulting poor correspondence between group's reported This work shows concern opinion research conditions be clearly understood by similar previous experiences.

Incentives for Answering Hypothetical Questions

Prediction markets and other reward mechanisms based on proper scoring rules can elicit accurate predictions about future events with public outcomes. However, many questions of public interest do not always have a clear answer. For example, facts such as the effects of raising or lowering interest rates can never be publicly verified, since only one option will be implemented. In this paper we...

Asking Hypothetical Questions About Stories Using QUEST

Many computational models of narrative include representations of possible worlds—events that never actually occur in the story but that are planned or perceived by the story’s characters. Psychological tools such as QUEST are often used to validate computational models of narrative, but they only represent events which are explicitly narrated in the story. In this paper, we demonstrate that au...

TESTING FOR AUTOCORRELATION IN UNEQUALLY REPLICATED FUNCTIONAL MEASUREMENT ERROR MODELS

In the ordinary linear models, regressing the residuals against lagged values has been suggested as an approach to test the hypothesis of zero autocorrelation among residuals. In this paper we extend these results to the both equally and unequally replicated functionally measurement error models. We consider the equally and unequally replicated cases separately, because in the first case the re...

Assessing the effect of data collection mode on measurement error

We review the methods typically used to assess the effects of mode on measurement and data comparability and then discuss some of the challenges, including 1) the need to avoid confounding effects, 2) the sensitivity of conclusions to methods of analysing experimental mode comparison data, 3) the difficulty of assessing whether measurement differences matter in practice, and 4) the assessment o...
